For those of you who would like to envision the Smoke House Grill (from the "Materialist's blog)
"I'm not married yet," was the first thing Anita said when the Materialist called her. But she did gladly make a reservation at Smoke House Grill, a hip restaurant so the Materialist could see new India in action. Here, the Materialist and Anita sipped killer martinis (black grape and basil; rosemary and Clementine) and ate fava bean-and-chevre ravioli and duck salad and tempura-battered spinach leaves while talking about all their mutual acquaintances, as well as Anita's book. What the Materialist found most moving about listening to Anita was her obvious affection for, and excitement about, India. She moved here two years ago as a necessary measure; she was writing her book, after all. But now she wants to stay. "This is the new India," she said, gesturing around the room, with its crimson walls and pretty-boy waiters, the trust-fund babies (a handsome, bored-looking Sikh guy in Diesel jeans and a lovely girlfriend; a couple who ran their hands up and down one another's backs while watching cricket on the flat-screen TV mounted on the back wall) and minimalist table settings, as the real international boho jetset soundtrack--Pink Martini's Sympathique--played in the background, "and I want to be a part of it."
